There’s always something

This is my observation from this week, there’s always fucking something to do. Of course maybe that sounds a little obvious, it would be a bit of a boring existence if there wasn’t something to be filling your time with, even doing nothing is doing something right?

I guess I more mean stuff that I don’t really want to be doing. There’s always dishes to wash, the floor always needs brushing or hoovering, there’s something somewhere that needs cleaning or tidying, there’s something that needs fixing, there’s something that needs buying. You get my drift? Now I understand why they need doing, I like to have clean dishes available when I want to cook or eat. I like having a tidy house, so I understand why those things need doing, but I don’t really seem to get ‘joy’ from them. Maybe joy is strong, but satisfaction.

I’m trying to convince myself as I start on another mundane task that the reason this task is necessary is because it allows a better condition that I do enjoy to exist. But my brain seems to really resist it. I think if I was affluent enough to be able to just throw plates away and buy new ones every meal I might even do it. How wasteful, how lazy?

But then, is it really lazy thinking? How many things were invented to try and make some of this crap less of a hassle. Dishwashers for example were developed for this example. People hire cleaners all the time. Why spend time doing something that doesn’t bring you joy if you can avoid it. That’s the real issue, I can’t avoid it because it feels like avoiding it requires money, and that resource is tight. Despite time being the more finite resource, I have more time than I have spare money.

Even worse than there always being a mundane task ahead, there’s usually chain of them. There’s quite often a mundane task blocking the mundane task you want to achieve. This comes down to organisation I guess and not putting things off for later. If you make sure to purchase washing up liquid then when you finally get the energy up to wash the dishes you won’t be scuppered by the fact you first have to go to the store to buy some. The following video comes to mind…although to be fair in this clip the items he’s choosing to put infront of the one he’s doing could be left and done later. But quite often the task that gets in the way can’t really be ignored.

Anyway, rather than complaining here, I’ve got a chain of mundane tasks to do.. and if I don’t go do them, there will be a whole new chain forming that depends on me doing this chain first. See ya!
